I believe that most of us have been in your situation at some point in our lives. I started out hiring a personal trainer for a few sessions just to get the basics. Once, I did that - I found a lot of information online but the real change came when I did Turbulence Training.
Reluctance to go to the gym is normal because most people would rather stay home and watch t.v. or do something else. For me, once I routinely "made myself go" to the gym on regular basis like Mon, Wed, Fri after work - it just became a habit (this is the key if you really want it to be a permanent part of your life - the same goes with nutrition). Some of the things that kept me going were my results and the adrenaline rush (similar to the feeling you're talking about).
I hope this helps. Have fun and good luck!
