Weight loss and/or fat loss are both by products of diet. You can execise til the cows come home, but if you are eating junk you will not make the kind of progress in the gym that you are hoping for. Eating at a deficit but getting adequate protein will encourage fat loss while not losing muscle. Eating at a surplus will encourage mass gain.
