I'll admit, it is kind of strange. It took me a couple workouts to get the hang of it, but I agree it's great for core stability.

Don't give up. Make sure that your feet are planted firmly and wide enough to keep you stable. Tighten up your core and keep the ball beneath your shoulders while you're performing the movement.
