Steve - I tracked myself (with no help from Internist) going from pre-diabetic to full blown. the two best resources are Jenny's Blood Sugars 101 (book is easier to read, but it is also on her blog - all of it and updated to boot), and after than Richard Berstein's Diabetes Solutions.
Many of us are pretty sceptical that losing weight generally helps. It is a good thing to do, but not necessarily for BGs. My fat loss and exercise did not slow down my progression to full diabetes. It is a pain in the ass to have to learn the ropes but there are a whole lot more things that are more seriousl.
