DAYTONA BEACH, FLORIDA (TICKER) —Ryan Newman and Tony Stewart wrecked during Saturday’s Daytona 500 practice session, a major setback for the new teammates on the eve of NASCAR’s premier race.
Newman, the defending Daytona 500 champion, lost control heading into turn 2 when the right-rear tire of his Chevrolet blew out. Stewart was caught up in the wreck, which occurred less than 30 minutes into the practice.
Both cars suffered major damage, forcing Newman and Stewart to switch to their backup Chevrolets for the Daytona 500.
Newman, who won last year’s Daytona 500 in a Penske Racing Dodge, has endured mechanical trouble throughout this past week. He struggled through right-tire failure during Thursday’s Gatorade Duels qualifying race and also dealt with an engine malfunction the previous day.
Stewart, who finished third in last year’s Daytona 500, will use the same car that he ran in last weekend’s Bud
