When I do sled or chain drags, I get a good hard pull initially with all my BW, and then as soon as it starts moving, lots of quick choppy steps. The key is to just keep it going, and don't let it stop or you're screwed. I did an easy 600lb drag this way. Like you said, it's not too bad when you get used to it.
