I use one for cycling and running. Unless I am doing sprints, then I don't need it. Mostly helpful for base rides or "threshold" rides/runs when I am trying to stay within a specific training zone. Also good for interval sessions as a means to gauge intensity. I am wary of becoming too dependent upon it, though, so I will do occasional rides without it...kinda liberating, actually.
