I lift as much as 4x/week in the off season with heavy strength training (NROL), and taper down to 3x/week, then 2x or 1x/week (these geared more towards full body combo lifting, i.e. Bent-over Row, Romanian Deadlift, Hang clean, Front Squat Push Press, Overhead Squat all w/o putting weight down = 1 rep, then do about 20... or Sumo deadlift to High Pull - that kinda stuff - full body, get heart rate up) as I ramp up the endurance portions of my training. If you've put in good weight training in the off season, then 1x/week should be good during your endurance season to maintain most of your strength. After I finish an "A" race, I will often take a week off, then hit the weights again at 3x/week for a couple weeks before getting back into tri training again.
