Well you can only breath a couple places during the stroke. I used to breath every second one, it was easier to breath on that side and I couldn't wait through till the next cycle.
I don't count steps when I run, but I do breath in a pattern. For me swimming is all about numbers. Number of laps, time, strokes, I usually forget what lap I am on by the time I am done. Lap 12, 1..2..3 breath, 1..2..3 breath, Wait, am I on 12...or am I done 12 after this? Crap. How many strokes was it this length? hahhahha.
