It's hard to get TOO MUCH protein. You can have more protein than you need for muscular growth, etc., in which case the extra is just treated much like any other calorie.
More protein than you need can certainly be a waste of money, depending on what you are eating to acheive the high protein numbers.
Too many calories can make you put on weight, regardless of where those calories come from.
