I have mostly skied in the woods on easy rolling hiking trails. Many of the state parks here have trail ratings. There are also some groomed places nearby. Not sure about the golf course angle since I don't live near one (they turned the one that used to be in my town into a mall *puke*). The people who own the property behind mine don't mind that I ski there ... there is an old farm road through the woods, and open rolling fields (where they graze cattle and horses the rest of the year) so that's usually where I go now.
