Yeah, DON'T put the pot in the microwave......on second thought in a dorm you might find a bunch of people that would enjoy the show. It might kill the mirowave but it would surely be a good drunken demonstration.....not that I know anything about that kind of thing.
All kidding aside though, you could use a deeper bowl but it will take longer and you will have to stop it and stir it at least once if you want any sort of consistency.
