You do need protein to build muscle but you don't need creatine to build muscle. You don't necessarily need a protein supplement either. In fact it is better to get your protein from real food such as Chicken, Tuna Salmon, Almonds, Peanuts, walnuts, and beef. You have to get the protein from somewhere.

The purpose of creatine supplementation is to boost supply of it that is already in your muscles. Supplementing with creatine allows a person to do more reps which will help a person get bigger and stronger. I think it helps with recovery to, but I'm not 100% sure about this.

I think that a person should have there routine and diet in order before they even consider taking creatine. Based on every thing I have read here and on other forums I don't think a newbie needs to take creatine anyways. If you do the things I said above than you will have great gains anyways.
