I think McCain knows, as every US politician knows, the US is in no position to get involved in fighting on Georgia's behalf. I think he's simply playing the "bring 'em on" role that won 2000 and 2004 for the Republicans. And one of the major players in those campaigns happened to be attending Yalta along with Saakashvili.

Maybe. But remember, Georgia may just be the first shoe. The other one (or more) may be still to drop, Ukraine perhaps? It is incumbent to issue some tough talk, and some meaningful sanctions of some kind, or the Russians will conclude there are no consequences to this kind of thing.

Obama will need to make at least some noises about consequences. I suspect Putin will be testing him soon after he takes office.
