sounds like crookneck


if the outside is soft (you can dent it with a fingernail) - treat it as a summer squash - look for recipes for zucchini or crookneck or pattypan. (if it is hard like a pumpkin it is a winter squash).

for summer squash, I agree - grilling or roasting are good. You can pan saute with a little garlic or onion too. Also good sprinkled with some parmesan when you are done.
you can also slice it up, mix with tomatoes, onions and some herbs and bake it up (or roast it on the grill in a foil pouch)
