Kind of interesting this got revived...

I guess I'm truly in a tiny minority -- I'd prefer silence over music. Nothing but my thoughts, the sound of the weights and my own breath. Of course I rarely get that -- my gym usually plays some hits of the 80s sort of stuff, and I keep getting distracted with thoughts of "even back when I was in high school this song really sucked. Nothing's changed."

I guess because I'm a musician I don't care for music as a background, unless I'm driving or the activity is truly mindless. Working out requires enough attention that I don't want to be distracted by music, and when I'm listening to my favorite music then I don't want to be distracted by other activities.
