Who has worked out in an upscale club that has elevator music playing in the morning? Depressed Mode man! Music is key. Working out to silence sucks, too. Find music that does three things: 1) Makes you feel confident, 2) Makes you feel energetic, and 3) Makes you focus without distractions from outside and within. I recently hit a new dead lift 2 rep max of 455 jamming out to the Allman Brothers Band, "One Way Out," off of The Filmore Concerts, Live at the Filmore East 1971...one of the best live albums ever done.
