oh, and FWIW, I tried BSS today without holding onto something and I'm still not there yet!! I do REALLY NEED to hold onto something!

Have you tried using light dumbbells for balance? When I started doing these I actually found it easier to balance with them. Otherwise I would do them with the overhead press with no weight... Just use your hands then...
