I lost a fair bit of weight on a low fat vegetarian diet (not vegan). However, the one thing I noticed is that far too many vegetarian recipes start with a lot of oil. And boy, soy nuts were not my friend. Even now I eat them, but pre-measure them so I'm only grabbing an ounce when I take some.

I'm convinced you can gain (or lose) on pretty much any combination of food. I know after the film "Super Size Me" there were at least two other people who did the McD's route and proved you could lose weight only eating there.
