Food intake before the workout is entirely optional. If it's impacting your performance, get some carbs in. If not, no big deal. Your overall systemic state is determined by your food intake over the day, not by one particular meal.

Protein before/during the workout is a good idea, but even that is not necessarily mandatory, provided the rest of your day is in check diet-wise.
