No, they aren't passe', but their value is a bit limited for the amount of floor space they take up. There's really on one exercise you can do on it that you can't do on other equipment, but it's a winner.
I'm having trouble finding a pic or video, so I'll try to describe what it is on the freemotion cablecross I've used.
You set one pulley low, the other high.
The low pulley is the one you pull toward you, the high pulley, you push away from you.
It's like a punching move. It's perhaps one of the best overall conditioning exercises I've seen. Equal to a deadlift, but focusing more on the upper body and mid-section.
