Default Working One Side Only

About two months ago I slightly hurt my shoulder. I decided to work through the discomfort by lowering the weights a bit and avoiding certain exercises. Unfortunately the shoulder does not seem to be getting better. I am now considering eliminating all upper body exercises and just concentrate on the lower body to see if the shoulder will improve. A friend recommended continuing working only one side of the upper body. He said he read a study that showed even with working only one side the other side will show strength gains although not at the same rate as the good side. Does anyone know if this is true or just a myth?
