This leads me to say that until gyms commit to educating members as to more effective methods of exrcise, and gym staff are better trained to provide effective training. We will continue to see the demise of the machines that take time to master but are more effective. In favour of the easier to use/learn.

Tom,
Some very good thoughts.
People, unfortunately, do not want to work at anything, including exercise. We live in a world of instant gratification and one in which, on a daily basis, we are seeing needless, yet highly coveted, work and time saving devices.
Hence, exercise has to have these qualities:
1) It must be easy to do with little exertion.
2) It must be comfortable with no stress on the body.
3) It must be painless with no strain or soreness afterwards.
4) It must not require any kind of learning curve so that accomplishment is instantaneous.
5) It must not require any kind of adaptation, so the machine is the device of choice to force your body into a specific motion.
6) It must be fun.
7) It must not occupy all of ones time or effort, so must be able to be used while a)reading b)watching television c)listing to an iPod d)talking on a cell phone
8) It must conveniently simulate something that I would never take the time to do in the real world
And the list could go on, but I think you get my point.
