It's an old and often told story in the climbing world, in 1970 the Messner brothers climbed the 26,667-foot Rupal face of Nanga Parbat in Pakistan. The ascent was an unbelievable challege and exhausting. The two brothers, Reihold and Günther followed the Diamer face, on the other side of the mountain, for the descent. The rest of the story goes that the brothers were seperated and Günther disappeared, in all likelihood in an avalanche.
Now, according to Climbing.com, Reinhold has identified what appears to be Günther's body, based on the boots and jacket found with the body, which was found at the bottom of the Diamir face. DNA testing will prove conclusively whether or not the body is that of Günther Messner.
Controversy has swirled around Reinhold Messner for years, with teammates accusing him of abandoning his brother on the mountain to achieve greater glory. from The treacherous descent caused Reinhold to lose the majority of his toes and a few fingers to frostbite.
