Default swimming and strengthening

just curious to know any exercises or strenthening techniques that are good for swimming. i was watching the navy swimmers last night at the pool laying on their backs with their legs hanging off a ledge and just kicking for several minutes then jumping in the pool and swimming a couple laps then out and kicking again. it went on for an hour. i can't imagine how rough that is on the abs, glutes, and legs.

so what i was thinking would be good for developing strength would be:
Push press, shoulder press, rows, lat pulldown, cable cross, squats and a variety of ab workouts. are there any others that would be really good for swimming or any of these that shouldn't be done?
