You don't need a prescription to buy a blood glucose meter and strips. Walmart has a meter for $8 and a hundred strips for $43. When I was pre-diabetic I measured my blood glucose and adopted a lower carb diet to keep the number down. Again I would recommend the Bernstein book, which is near encyclopedic in it coverage of diabetes. Most people who follow him do not follow him exactly, but he is the best guide.
