Bernie, my standard response is, I strongly suggest trying the workouts exactly the way Alwyn designed them.

But having said that, I admit I usually modify workouts to train around injuries, to accommodate my schedule, or to incorporate elements of other training programs I want to keep working on.

I also tend to shorten rest periods in most workouts because I have ADD ... unless I'm doing Chad Waterbury's workouts, in which case I have to lengthen rest periods because I'm too old to do it the way he specifies.

The guidelines on page 233 are just a suggestion, not holy writ. Some people recover faster than others. I don't want to tell you not to do the types of training you enjoy most. You know your own body and have to make your own choices. Do whatever works best for you, and have fun doing it.
