Here are my rules in terms of footware and squatting:

Barefoot: for all box squat variations (also, deadlifts should be done barefoot or with a flat shoe.....chuck taylor's, Nike Frees, etc)

Shoes: front squats, or any touch-n-go variation
I had my flat champions on. I thought to take them off, but at the Y it just feels wierd going barefoot for any lift. I shouldn't give a shert, next time, no shoes! These shoes are pretty flat though. I am going to look into the Nike Frees when the dust settles.

The plates under heels was my idea for the first few sets, didn't mean to imply this to be your method for this exercise (necessarily). I wanted to get lower and my ankles felt tighter than that camel's ass you talk about.
