is it better to only focus on NROL4W and run shorter distances until I lean out, or could I do NROL4W and train for this marathon and still lose fat. ie does marathon training really adversely affect fat loss?? (I have done 3 prior marathons, so I am not a newbie to distance running)
most of the reading I have done (including NROL) says that if you do strength training and endurance training simultaneously, your body will choose endurance (ie your lifting goals will be compromised.
does anyone have any experience with this?

I'd focus on NROL4W in your situation. For two reasons really. Based on your post it seems to me that you haven't trained for a while due to your IT band. For that reason, I'd focus on getting back into your workouts and training hard. I wouldn't worry too much about jumping into the endurance training, raise your base strength qualities and drop your body fat while making sure your IT bad is ok.
