Default age and metabolism?

This is a question I was recently asked on my forum

Here's a question for you coach, at what age does your metabolism start to slow down and by how much. I know that exercise helps to keep it elevated but can your food choices also help.

Answer: there is no specific age

consider factors influencing average daily metabolic rate
1- REE
2- TEA
3- TEF

as you lose skeletal muscle tissue you could expect a small decrease in REE (unless loses are huge), decrease in adrenaline as well as decrease in sns and atrophy of other tissues and organs could contribute to slow down

activity decrease means less TEA

food generally (TEF) accounts for 10-15% of ADMR
of three macros protein have most prominent effects

with that being said numerous factors must be considered when stating a causative affect aging has on metabolic rate

Simple answer- it depends and is greatly variable

the best thing you can do to decrease slow down is stay active

keep in mind metabolism is the sum of all chemical changes occurring in the body

Alan may have some comments to add.

Thanks,
