There are non-traditional assessments that can approximate your VO2max, but they're typically quite imprecise to the point where even if you had improved your VO2max, the test might not detect it because of the error. VO2max tends to increase very slowly and there's speculation that there's likely an upper ceiling (or limit) that is genetically determined for every person that can't be passed.

I suggest looking at your local university for studies that require healthy males in the Kinesiology (or whatever they call Phys Ed) department. Getting into a study is the cheapest way to get fitness assessments. Sometimes, depending on the program, students need testing hours for certification, and you can get a test done cheaper, or for free.
