Well until Bill comes along JP a few questions.

-Does it hurt if you were reaching for something up high in a cabinet (grabbing for a can of soup)
-Was there anything leading up to this (lack of mobility in raising movement, stiffness or pain at night, swelling) or did it come out of nowhere?
-Do you perform a lot of repetitive overhead movements?

Off the bat to me it sounds like shoulder tendonitis or impingement syndrome.
In short the pain could be caused due to swelling or bursitis of the bursa. A tear of the rotator cuff could be possible as well being the level of pain you are describing. Of course because of that level of pain you may want to get a MRI,

Right off the bat I would...
-Ice and Rest.
-Avoid doing any overhead movements or backward reaching movements that would irritate your injury.
-If it starts to heel well on its on then eventually you should start to incorporate rehab movements and stretches. Bill has that covered in spades.
