I think my pool even has the distances and number of laps required to get that distance posted and I made the same (similar) mistake last year. Like you, I knew inside that I hadn't worked hard enough. When I was a kid, I remember having to do a mile swim for a YMCA swimming certification and I did it no problem. A few years ago, I was doing 1 hour swims at lunch so I probably got more than a mile in. Still, last year, I just kind of got confused for some reason... oh well.
