I think that lengthening your body is important and it feels right to me when I'm in the water.

Personally, I'd go with my previous suggestion of kicking on your back or side before the kickboard. Having your head up in the air is just so not like your body position when swimming. I know lots of people do it but it just seems so unnatural to me.
