Swam for years, up to five times a week, some years really hard, did not lose weight or fat. To some degree I suspect I adapted my body to swimming, and probably was not getting an afterburn.
Lo carb, weight lifting, and HIIT did knock fat down. I still HIIT by swimming on occasion, but almost by definition you cannot adapt to HIIT.
ps suspect the swimming all over did a lot of good for me
