Total number of pulls, does that make sence? Every time you pull that counts as one stroke.

I think that the most important aspect to great swimming is your ability to feel the changes in water pressure on your hands, body and feet as you're slicing through the water. The better your "feel" for the water is, less effort you'll put into your swim with fewer strokes per length. Working on DPS should be every swimmers priority when training in the water.
