You need to be careful too, though. More kids are snatched today and not recovered because predators are more mobile. Still , you can go outside and watch your kids play. (They don't always want you to join in.) You can do yardwork while they are playing or maintenance or just sit on the porch. If they want you to do so, you can join in. My Dad would take the neighborhood kids with us to go fishing or to hike and have cookouts in the woods. It was a lot of fun and a source of good memories. We had more freedom to roam, but the world is a more dangerous place for children today.
However, there are opportunities in sport and recreation that we never had as kids. Midget football didn't exist in most communities as well as soccor. We had little league and youth league baseball and church basketball and high school sports. Now, if you have some talent for a sport, or not, you could find a way to play.
