Mahler’s Monday Morning Motivator # 77 – The World Is Mine

Good Morning, Guys,

Update on Steve Vaught, The Fat Man Walking. He is near Grants, New Mexico and has walked 746 miles thus far. Visit www.thefatmanwalking.com to check his progress.

This morning: Week 3 of Mike Mejia’s Scrawny to Brawny Phase II. Not a lot of sleep last night. Only did my 5 x 5 front squats at 185. Was hoping to top 200. But, I did them. No excuses.

Over the weekend some friends came in and the three couples spent the time in Annapolis. The temperature was in the high 90’s with humidity through the roof. I secretly took pride in my stamina as the other guys and gals complained about the heat and did not want to walk around and tour much. At one point, we rounded a corner and there was a family, seeking some shade under a tree. In their midst was a teenage boy in a wheelchair. I thought, how sad at such a young age and how uncomfortable he must be, confined to that chair. The thought of his smile and demeanor stuck with me throughout the day.

When I returned home, Sunday evening, I remembered a little poem I had saved a while back. I put it aside for just such an occasion. I changed it a little and adapted it to fit those times when we complain about what is without thinking about what could be.

The World is Mine

Today, upon a bus I saw a very handsome man
And wished that I could look that good,
His boyish looks and tan.
When suddenly he rose to leave,
and hobbled down the aisle.
He had one leg and used a crutch.
He passed and flashed a smile.
Oh, please forgive me when I whine.
I have two legs; the world is mine.

I stopped to buy a paper.
The lad who sold it had such charm.
I talked with him, he seemed so glad.
If I were late, it'd do no harm.
And as I left, he said to me,
"I thank you, you've been kind.
It's nice to talk with folks like you.
You see," he said, "I'm blind."
Oh, please forgive me when I whine.
I have two eyes; the world is mine.

Then later walking down the street,
I saw a child I thought I knew.
He stood and watched the others play,
but, alas, did not know what to do.
I stopped a moment and then I said,
"Why don't you join them dear?"
He looked ahead without a word.
I found, he could not hear.
Oh, please forgive me when I whine.
I have two ears; the world is mine.

With feet to take me where I'd go.
With eyes to see the sunset's glow.
With ears to hear what I would know.
Forgive me when I whine.
For truly I've been blessed indeed,
And yes, the world is mine.

I will always try to think that when things are bad, there are others who are going through so much more and take some motivation from the way they encounter adversity. Who am I to skip a workout or complain when others tackle life with such resolve.

Have a great week.
