In my old age I've found that putting some dynamic stretching in before my normal static "classic martial art" stretching is a big help.
I start with gentle leg swings, forward and back, building in height up to ten, each leg.
Then inner to outer swings, almost like a reverse roundhouse, again building in height.
Then Outer to inner leg swings, like a crescent kick.
Then side swings, like a poorly executed side kick.
Then knee rotations.
Then I get stuck into all the traditional stretching before making the heavy bag wish it had never been born!
