That is great and I try to incorporate those things into just playing with my son. However it is hard to get him interested in those sports because he is a huge fan of the T.V. sports(Football, Basketball, and especially Baseball). I try, like I said, to expose him to all kinds of athletic stimulus but if there are referees and a crowd to watch it he gets ultra competitive. It is hard to get him to do something just for fun so I mostly have to do it in the context of back yard play.

I like the part about sub maximal effort. I really recognized after this baseball season that throwing the ball easy and taking just a little off the swing are things that are really hard for him. I never would have thought of swimming as a way to develop that though. Swimming is one thing that I have no problem getting him to do.
