Default Mahler's Monday Morning Motivator # 122 - Independence Day

(My Dear Friends, if you read the motivator and don’t wish to post a comment, just give it a bump to keep it current. Thank you.)

Mahler’s Monday Morning Motivator # 122 – Independence Day

Independence Day

Seeking knowledge, at some point usually involves seeking the knowledgeable. You’ve learned what you can from books and articles. You’ve scoured the Internet for information on the subjects that interest you. Sooner or later you find someone that you believe will have the ability to lead you farther in your quest for the understanding that you desire. Perhaps it’s their grasp of the subject or their facility for explaining things clearly. Whatever it might be, you align yourself with their way of thinking and you settle in for a continuing learning experience. It’s not a bad way to advance your knowledge and thought. But, for some, this is where a lot of their own thinking comes to a grinding halt. They sit at the feet of their master and let him do the thinking for them, hanging on every word as though he is handing down the eleventh commandment.

Finding a hero or mentor is an excellent way to continue your journey. It’s important to understand, however, that there are a lot of theories out there and that often no one theory fits every person or every situation. There are a number of very knowledgeable people who can help you to understand that information, but as a friend reminded me recently, there is great joy in taking what you have learned and thinking for yourself.

Remember that the theories of today are culled from the successes and failures of yesterday. Many of the rules that were treated as gospel for decades are now entering the realm of myth and anecdote. There is no reason to believe that the theories of today are in any way set in stone and many, frankly, are best guesses based on the information at hand. Who knows, some of them may be bringing a little smile to the faces of the seekers of the future.

Take the best of what you have learned. Listen to the people who have knowledge and understanding beyond your own. Be open to new ideas. But, at some point you will benefit from taking what the experts have told you, adding a good measure of what your own body and mind speak to you, and thinking for and about yourself, declare an independence day.
