Hey David - In the specific FLII section (pg 216), it says "Do each of the two workouts six times, alternating between them. You can do two, three, or even four workouts a week. The only rule: Never train more than two days in a row." That said, I think how long it takes is up to you. If you're doing 3 workouts a week, that comes out to 4 weeks of FLII. Now, going back to FLI and your original question, I guess the same would apply.
I'm also an eternal beginner and I find the 3/week schedule to be working for me. You may find that you want to do more or less, depending on your body and your ability to recover. Good luck!
