I had meant to post this point as well, but didn't think it would have been terribly relevant, but:
3) Be very very wary of taking conclusions of animal studies and applying them to humans. Humans are not animals. Certain animals can be used as models (i.e. similar, but not identical) for human systems or disease, but ultimately, any animal study can only hope to highlight the need for further study (preferrably in humans). Realize also, that in order to publish an animal study in any journal that has an admittedly human focus, researchers need to spin their research appropriately, and in the process may make larger generalizations about their results than appropriate.
