Sure squats may help with your ab strength, but you were saying that they'll help with his pullups. Squats work your legs, lower back and abs. Improving your squat will not help your pullup, and improving your pullup will not help your squat.
The Big5 are great exercises to do, I'm not saying that they aren't, but you have to think of what movements work what muscles.
btw Fender, if you've got lovehandles and you want to get rid of them, you need to lose some fat. That's what they are, just a layer of fat covering your obliques.

And major action will certainly make you feel a bit uncomfortable, which is absolutely fine. You've gotta get excited about feeling uncomfortable, you've gotta love feeling slightly uncomfortable, because you know that you're stepping outside the boundaries that you used to create.
